The Path to Net-Zero Emissions: How Energy Summit 2025 Addresses the Challenges of Renewable Energy in Bulgaria
Exploring key insights and strategies from industry leaders
We had the privilege of attending the Energy Summit event organized by Capital, where industry leaders and government representatives shared their vision for the future of the energy sector in Bulgaria, Eastern Europe, and Europe.
Some participants expressed optimism about the faster-than-expected deployment of BESS energy projects in Bulgaria, while others highlighted the need to expand grid capacity and improve connectivity between member states.
Industry leaders such as Sunotec, Solarpro Holding, Enery, and Sunterra RE outlined the main challenges in implementing large-scale solar and BESS projects, while the Electricity System Operator (ESO) EAD presented significant cross-border connectivity projects that will facilitate the transfer of wind energy from west to east and solar energy from south to north across Europe.
Last but not least, the Executive Director of the National Electric Company (NEK) EAD, Mr. Martin Georgiev, presented the development stage of several pumped-storage hydropower plant (PSHPP) projects, which are critical for the future energy balance of the grid.
The discussions at Energy Summit clearly demonstrated that collaboration, innovation, and strategic infrastructure development are essential for ensuring a sustainable energy future and energy security. As Bulgaria and Europe progress toward greater integration of renewable sources, overcoming challenges related to grid expansion, energy storage, and connectivity will be crucial.
